Sunscreens
That Pay for Themselves
Here's What Just Happened
The Rodriguez family in Queen Creek just got their September SRP bill. Down from $385 to $247. That's after installing sunscreens on 14 west-facing windows in July.
They paid $3,200 for the installation. SRP sent them a rebate check for $980 (at $1 per square foot). Their net cost: $2,220. Monthly savings: $138 average through cooling season. Payback period: 16 months.
After that, it's pure savings. For the next 15-20 years.
This isn't unusual. This is what we see every week.

What Sunscreens Actually Do
It's Not About Shade — It's About Physics
Heat enters your home three ways: conduction (through walls), convection (air movement), and radiation (through windows). Windows are responsible for 50% of your home's heat gain. Your AC is fighting a losing battle against the sun streaming through the glass.
Sunscreens block 80-90% of solar radiation before it becomes heat inside your home. Your AC runs less. Your house stays cooler even at the same thermostat setting. The hot spots near windows disappear.
But here's what people don't expect: Your furniture stops fading. That leather couch, the hardwood floors, the artwork — UV damage stops. Your house is more comfortable because there's no glare on the TV. You get privacy during the day without closing blinds.
And yeah, your electric bill drops. A lot.
Our Manufacturing Advantage
We Build Every Screen in Gilbert
Most sunscreen companies are really just sales operations. They measure your windows, send the dimensions to some fabricator, wait 2-3 weeks, then install whatever shows up. If it doesn't fit right, they send it back and you wait another 2-3 weeks.
We manufacture every screen in our facility on Juanita Avenue. We've been doing it since 2012.
Your measurements get walked 50 feet to our fabrication area. We cut Phifer SunScreen material (the good stuff — not the cheap alternatives some companies use). We build frames to exact dimensions. We use stainless steel hardware that won't rust in two years.
If a screen needs adjustment during installation, we fix it same-day. If you need a repair three years later, we build replacement parts immediately. No waiting on third parties. No excuses about suppliers.
This matters for SRP rebates too. We build to SRP specifications automatically. Every screen we make qualifies. We've processed over 200 rebates with 100% approval because we control the entire process.
Installation Process
What Actually Happens
Day 1:
Measurement
We measure every window. Not "about 36 inches" — exactly 35.75 inches. Small differences matter when screens need to fit properly. We note which windows get sun when, what color works with your house, and whether you need pet-resistant mesh. Takes about an hour.
Days 2-7:
Manufacturing
We build your screens. Custom cut, custom fit. Quality check before they leave our facility.
Day 8-10:
Installation
We show up with screens that fit. Installation takes 3-5 hours for most homes. We mount them properly (no damage to stucco or siding), adjust for a perfect fit, and clean up completely. You sign off on the work. You submit the SRP rebate paperwork for the rebate.
Week 8-10:
Rebate arrives
SRP sends your rebate check.
“The installation crew showed up exactly when they said they would and installed 18 screens in about 4 hours. Eight weeks later, we got a check for $1,127. The whole process was ridiculously smooth.”

Types and Options
What You Actually Need to Decide
80% vs 90% solar blockage: Most people overthink this. 90% blocks more heat but slightly obscures your view — like looking through a screen door. 80% keeps views clearer but lets in more heat.
Simple decision: West-facing windows (brutal afternoon sun) get 90%. Everything else gets 80%. Unless you really care about the view from a specific window, then get 80% there too.
Colors: Charcoal (most popular), desert sand (lighter, less visible), or bronze (matches brown trim). Most HOAs approve all three. Charcoal provides the best visibility from inside.
Pet mesh: If your dog or cat has destroyed regular screens, pet mesh is 7 times stronger. Costs about 20% more. Worth it if you have destructive pets, unnecessary otherwise.
Frame colors: Match your window trim. White, tan, bronze, or mill finish (silver). No impact on performance, just aesthetics.
Repair and Re-screening
Don't Replace — Repair
Sunscreens get damaged. Especially during monsoons. Especially if you have pets. Especially after 10+ years of UV exposure.
Small tears: $45-65 to patch
Re-screening (new mesh, same frame): $85-120
Bent frame repair: $60-85
Hardware replacement: $25-45
Complete replacement: $150-200
Most repairs happen the same day because we manufacture here. Drop off in the morning, pick up after lunch. No shipping to mysterious vendors, no two-week waits.
If the frame's still good (usually it is), we just replace the mesh. If the mesh has minor damage, we patch it. Only if the frame is seriously damaged do you need a full replacement.
After 10-15 years, the mesh might be UV-degraded enough to need re-screening. Still cheaper than replacement, extends life another 10 years.
The SRP Rebate Program
Free Money (Basically)
SRP pays you $1.00 per square foot to install sunscreens. The average East Valley home gets $800-$1,500 back. The program ends April 30, 2026, and you have to submit within 6 months of installation.
Here's what you do: Measure qualifying windows (we can help). Submit the application with the required photos. Provide an installation certificate (we do that). Follow up on approval. Track your rebate status.
You get a check 6-10 weeks later.
We've done this 200+ times. Every single one approved. Not because we're lucky — because we know exactly what SRP requires and we build screens that comply automatically.
Real Economics
The Math That Matters
Typical Installation:
15 west/south-facing windows
90% solar blockage screens
Installation cost: $3,200
SRP rebate: -$1,050
Net cost: $2,150
Typical Savings:
Summer bill reduction: $110-140/month (May-September)
Winter bill reduction: $20-30/month (December-February)
Annual savings: $700-900
Payback period: 24-30 months
10-year savings: $7,000-9,000
20-year savings: $14,000-18,000
These aren't projections. These are based on actual customer bills we've tracked.
Variables that affect savings: How much glass you have. Which direction it faces. Your current insulation. Your AC efficiency. Your thermostat habits.
But everyone saves something. And with the SRP rebate, most people hit payback within 2 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
15-20 years with minimal maintenance. The frame lasts forever unless damaged. The mesh degrades from UV over 10-15 years but is replaceable.
-
Some, yes. Like looking through a screen door. You get used to it within a week. The temperature difference makes it worthwhile for most people.
-
They reduce heating bills too (less heat loss through windows), though not as dramatically as cooling savings. Some people remove screens from north-facing windows in winter for more light.
-
Technically, yes, but you won't get the SRP rebate (requires licensed contractor installation), and DIY screens usually don't fit as well or last as long.
-
Basically none. Hose them off once a year. Check hardware annually. That's it.
